Some years ago while looking for free dance music, I listened to many, many different versions of Cole Porter songs. One of my favorites is “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” and one of my favorite versions of that song was done by Natalie Cole.
Folks will undoubtedly remember her by “Unforgettable,” the duet she recorded with the voice of her father, Nat “King” Cole. But I do love this song; it is one that shows Cole Porter’s blend of wistful and wry lyrics and beautiful melody at its best.
Natalie Cole sang this for the soundtrack of the movie De-lovely, starring Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd. There is a wonderful instrumental interlude as well as Natalie’s unforgettable voice; she sings this with just a little bit of edginess that keeps the emotional life of the song from falling into a pool of schmaltz or becoming monotonous “elevator music”; it also matches the trumpet solo nicely.

Happy New Year! I just found some great ice dance videos and thought I would share. It reinforces much that you have talked about on your blog. J just watched the one on back cross-rolls. Maybe I’ll watch a video a day until I can get back on the ice.

Thank you so much for posting this. Natalie Cole’s death just shocked me; I had no idea she had been ill for years. I will miss her voice, but thank goodness for recordings. Now she can sing with her dad all the time.
De-lovely is one of my favorite movies, Between this song and So In Love (With You Am I) sung by Kevin Klein, I spend most of the movie with tears in my eyes. Just wonderful

Thanks for your comments–Natalie Cole will be missed! Yes, the rest of the De-lovely soundtrack is also wonderful. So good to hear you mention those particular songs; we wound up using excerpts from “So in Love” (the version by Lara Fabian and Mario Frangoulis) and “De-lovely” for our free dance. Can’t go wrong with Cole Porter.
